Just as bad weather hit the northwest the previous evening, City overwhelmed United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal win for the City coach's side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Defeats for United

This scoreline marked consecutive league defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

Manchester United's ability to manage league and continental football with a thin squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the UCL. Considering the calendar, it always appeared this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed weary throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the dropping of the in-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in opposition, have no such workload worries. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

Early Chances

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th header of the season.

They extended their lead with two more goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was permitted to advance through the midfield from the back, the pitch widened for the hosts. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a swift shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the room to strike a effort home from range.

Second Half

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to beat any team who ended above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and United to place them in a commanding position after the opening fixtures.
